WSSU names Bomani H. Spell associate provost, vice chancellor for student development and engagement

Winston-Salem State University has named Dr. Bomani H. Spell, an accomplished higher education leader with extensive experience developing student-centered programs at HBCUs, as its new associate provost and vice chancellor for student development and engagement.

Spell, former associate vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, assumed his role at WSSU on Aug. 3. He previously worked at Jarvis Christian University (formerly Jarvis Christian College), Tuskegee University and Westminster College. 

Spell joins WSSU five months after Chancellor Bonita J. Brown launched “We Are Rising,” the university’s new strategic plan, which prioritizes student success and inspiring academics.

Throughout his career, Spell has worked collaboratively across academic and administrative divisions to strengthen student support services, improve retention and graduation rates, and foster campus environments where students feel connected and empowered to succeed.

In his new role, Spell will provide strategic leadership for programs and services that support the holistic development of WSSU students. Reporting directly to Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Dr. Stevie L. Lawrence, Spell will oversee the Division of Student Affairs, which includes campus life, career services, housing and residence life, campus recreation, student health services, counseling centers and community standards. 

“Dr. Spell’s leadership will help ensure that WSSU students have the resources, opportunities and support they need to thrive both inside and outside the classroom,” Lawrence said. “His commitment to student success, collaboration and inclusive excellence aligns closely with Winston-Salem State University’s mission and strategic priorities. I am confident his vision and experience will further strengthen our efforts to create an engaging, supportive and transformative student experience. I’m glad Dr. Spell has joined WSSU as a key member of our leadership team.”

Spell grew up in Englewood, a neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side that has faced longstanding economic and social challenges. He credits Father Joseph Brown, whom he met while attending Southern Illinois University, with inspiring him and helping shape the professional he has become.

“Lifting as We Climb” is one of Spell’s mantras, and he plans to practice that at Winston-Salem State University.

“My lived experiences have taught me the importance of helping others to ensure they succeed,” Spell said. “Winston-Salem State University is an excellent institution with an already well-established Division of Student Affairs and talented students. I’m excited to improve upon existing programs and develop innovative new ways to help our students as they become the next generation of leaders.

“I’m also very grateful to Chancellor Bonita Brown and Provost Lawrence for the confidence they’ve placed in me with this wonderful opportunity,” Spell continued. “I’ve been on the job one week and look forward to working with WSSU leaders across campus to ensure we exceed the expectations of the institution’s nearly 5,000 students and their families who have entrusted their education to us.”
