2023 Camps
All camps listed below will be held on the Winston-Salem State University campus. Most are residential but a few are day camps for participants who live in the area. If the camp is open to the public for registration, the name of the camp will be linked to the camp’s registration site.
July 15-21
Boys Camp is an Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Sixth District program that yearly provides for boys ages 8 – 14 the opportunity to spend one week at summer camp. The camp focus is on enhancing a camper’s self-esteem, confidence, and ability to interact with others by providing its participants a wide variety experiences through its team building activities and adventures. Some of the projects/programs at Boys Camp include the following:
- Financial planning for kids
- Conflict resolution
- Reading
- Arts and crafts
- Water safety (swimming)
- Archery
- Team sports
- Golf
- Computer literacy
The goal is for the boys to leave having had fun, but more importantly, to leave feeling good about themselves, their accomplishments, and the friends they made during the week.
July 24 - 28
Advanced Placement Capstone APSI
The weeklong workshops train teachers on delivering interdisciplinary instruction supporting student research and facilitating project-based assessments.
Fernando Jones created Blues Camp North Carolina, an international music program, and established it Monday, July 5, 2010 on the campus of Columbia College Chicago in the Music Center. Jones said, "It has been a dream since childhood to have a centrally located place where children could come and play the Blues in a user friendly, nurturing environment on a college or performing arts campus."
- The Blues Camp at WSSU will take place June 12 - 16
- The Blues camp is a non-residential camp, with activities taking place between 8:30 am and 11:30 am
- Students will work in small groups with Mr. Fernando Jones and his team of musicians from Columbia College in Chicago
- There will be opportunities for both solo and ensemble music instruction, character building activities, as well as educational/fun activities within the city of Winston-Salem (museums, Old Salem, Dave & Busters, etc.)
- We are expecting up to 25 students, in grades 6 - 12
- With the exception of a 30-minute campus tour (probably led by Dr. Brown or one of our music majors), camp attendees will be limited to the Fine Arts Building
- All adult staff and parent volunteers have been asked to ensure they have a background check on file with their employer from within the last five years
- If the camp logistics go as they did in previous years, we probably won’t even be on campus on Friday, June 16, but the culminating day’s activities will take place entirely at the Winston-Salem Delta Fine Arts Center
June 18 - July 15
The North Carolina Governor's School is a four-week summer residential program for gifted and talented high school students, integrating academic disciplines, the arts, and unique courses on each of two campuses. Learning focuses on the exploration of the most recent ideas and concepts in each discipline, and it does not involve credit, tests, or grades. Students are selected to attend through a competitive process after being nominated by their public school unit or nonpublic school.May 21-25, 2023
The Pitch, a 72-hour business competition, provides the resources and knowledge to bridge the business building gap for HBCU students. A 100 undergraduate HBCU students, are placed in teams that include both the aspiring entrepreneurs, technology enthusiasts, and the product builders. Charged to share ideas, create products and pitch to a panel of industry experts; each participant is exposed to Apple’s programming language, Swift, and taught the Business Model Canvas. During the competition, participants are equipped with tailored coaching that allows them to build smarter and faster while having fun creating the next big idea! By the end of the competition, participants are equipped with increased knowledge and experience in the areas of venture ideation, team building, business model canvas, customer discovery, and pitching program connects students with the startup ecosystem and empowers them to develop an entrepreneurial mindset through coaching, training and networking.
July 24-26
Powerhouse University is an OVERNIGHT Senior Team Camp for high school and Senior All-Star teams.
June 19 - 30

This is a STEM camp for middle schoolers.
June 20 - July 28
The Reading and Math Summer Camp (RaMS-C) is a 6-week camp for rising first – fourth graders. This program builds literacy skills and mathematical reasoning, supported by research-based activities that creatively align with NC curricula. Camp participants are taught by certified teachers who instruct students to assist with their retention of literacy and mathematical concepts. RaMS-C assists in reducing the summer slide or regression once students return to school after summer. All strategies are designed to ensure participants are on track towards grade level reading by third grade.
June 18 - 23

GEAR UP students and families who are in middle school (grades 6th, 7th, 8th) and/or rising 9th graders are invited to participate in an all-expense paid six day/five-night summer enrichment residential camp on the beautiful campus of Winston-Salem State University. During their stay, students and families will engage in programs designed to increase their awareness of high demand careers within the medical and judicial industry, discover the benefits and rewards of entrepreneurship and consider careers in education inside and outside the classroom. Additionally, topics throughout the week will include academic success strategies, leadership development, financial planning, scholarship qualifications and eligibility. Participants will conclude the weeklong camp with a better understanding of programs at two-year and four-year postsecondary institutions with the goal of continuing to increase their awareness of college preparation, academic readiness, high school completion, and postsecondary enrollment, persistence, and completion.
June 16 or June 17
This day camp is for athletes who are interested in taking their skills to the next level. Campers will receive instruction from WSSU coaches and players through specialized drills. All skills will be covered and campers will be divided by age, grade, skill and experience for competitive game play.
June 9 or June 10
This one-day camp is available to rising 8th graders up to rising seniors. This camps will provide the training of all fundamentals including passing, setting, hitting, blocking and serving. Campers will be divided by age, grade, skill and experience. Sessions will also contain position specific sessions. Lunch will be provided.
June 3 Session 1: 9am-12pm or Session 2: 1pm-4pm
Available to boys and girls, ages 7-13, who are on the introductory level to learn the fundamental skills of the game of volleyball. Each session offers the opportunity to learn and train both offensive and defensive skills. Campers will be divided up by either age, grade, experience or skill level. Meals will not be provided.
