The Young Executive Leadership Academy
The Young Executive Leadership Academy (YELA) is a leadership academy designed for scholars in grades 9-12 and first/second year of college through the North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network (NC-MSEN) Pre-College Program at Winston-Salem State University.
YELA equips scholars with the mindset, values, and leadership principles needed to rise into executive roles across a variety of industries. The academy bridges leadership development, community engagement, and career readiness—creating direct pathways for high-potential scholars to access opportunities with local and regional companies and organizations.
Through the program, scholars gain direct exposure to and mentorship from executive leaders and professionals. Participants also receive free access to professional development experiences, including résumé workshops, interview preparation, personal finance education, strengths assessments, career mapping, and leadership development training.
YELA maintains a professional learning environment designed to prepare scholars for the expectations of the workplace. Participants are expected to adhere to a business dress code and maintain consistent attendance to successfully complete and graduate from the program. Scholars will also participate in field trips, leadership experiences, and community engagement activities, while gaining access to internship and job opportunities through program partners. In recognition of excellence and commitment, top-performing scholars will be eligible for awards and prizes.
Through YELA, scholars are empowered to lead with conviction, character, and collaboration, positioning them to make an immediate and lasting impact in their communities, colleges, and future careers.
