Transferability of External Courses
Approved Institutions
WSSU students are permitted to enroll in and complete courses at other institutions for transfer credit, provided that prior approval is obtained. These approved institutions include:
-
Other UNC system schools
-
Community colleges
-
Other regionally accredited colleges and universities
Prior Approval
Before enrolling in any external courses, students must consult with their academic advisors or department chair to ensure:
-
The course is equivalent to a WSSU course
-
It meets degree requirements
-
Transfer credit will be granted by submitting an Application to Take Courses at Another Institution Request
Ineligible Platforms
Please be advised that courses offered through online learning platforms such as Straighterline, Sophia Learning, Portage Learning, and similar agencies have been reviewed and determined to be ineligible for transfer credit at WSSU. This policy is effective October 1, 2025.
Examples of courses that will not be accepted from these platforms include, but are not limited to:
- General Biology I & II (Lecture and Lab)
- Anatomy & Physiology I & II (Lecture and Lab)
- General Microbiology / Microbiology (Lecture and Lab)
- Chemistry (Lecture and Lab)
Important Notes:
-
Students who completed courses through these platforms before October 1, 2025, may take a final exam for the equivalent WSSU course. A minimum grade of C in one attempt is required to receive credit.
-
Any courses taken through these platforms after October 1, 2025, will not be approved and cannot be used for transfer credit regardless of documentation or completion status.
We strongly encourage all students to discuss course options and transfer eligibility with their academic advisors before enrolling in courses through any external or online provider.
If you have further questions or need assistance identifying approved course options, please don’t hesitate to contact your advisor or transferandadult@wssu.edu.
