Handicap parking
The North Carolina statute for handicap placards is N.C. General Statute 20-37.6, which grants parking privileges for vehicles displaying a valid handicap placard, plate, or temporary placard. This allows for unlimited parking in time-restricted zones but does not apply to areas where parking is completely prohibited or reserved for special vehicles. It is illegal to park in a handicap space without a proper placard or plate, or to obstruct a curb ramp or curb cut.
When may I use disability parking?
Disability parking may be used only when the person to whom the placard or plate was issued is in the vehicle. If that person is not in the vehicle, the driver may not use the disability placard/plate.
Anyone else using a disability parking placard or plate for any reason may be subject to posted fines.
Fire Lane
The North Carolina fire lane statute is primarily found in G.S. § 20-162, which prohibits parking or standing in a designated fire lane. This applies to both public and private vehicular areas, and local ordinances may also apply, such as those for marking requirements and enforcement penalties.
