WSSU GEAR UP: Preparing Students for College and Careers

WSSU Gear UpThe Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) GEAR UP (Gaining Early Access and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is designed to empower students with the tools, resources, and experiences they need to succeed in both college and future careers. Through a wide range of academic, personal, and professional development opportunities, GEAR UP ensures that students are prepared to navigate the transition from high school to higher education and the workforce.

  • FY1&2: 18 Schools & 2 IHE / FY3-7: 31 Schools & 1 IHE
  • Approximately 17,000 students and their families

Academic Services:

  • Tutoring & Academic Coaching: Individual and group sessions in core subjects such as math, science, English, and technology.
  • College & Test Prep: SAT/ACT prep courses, study skills training, and academic advising to strengthen college readiness.
  • Enrichment Programs: Summer residential and after-school programs focused on STEAM, literacy, and critical thinking to challenge students beyond the classroom.

Career Services:

  • Career Exploration: Field trips, job shadowing, and guest speakers to expose students to a wide range of career options, including STEAM and high-demand industries.
  • Internships & Mentorships: Partnerships with local businesses, universities, and community organizations to provide students with real-world experiences.
  • Skill-Building Workshops: Resume writing, interview preparation, professional etiquette, and soft skills training to prepare students for the workforce.

Family Services:

  • Workshops & Trainings: Sessions on college preparation, financial aid, FAFSA completion, and effective parent involvement strategies.
  • Family Enrichment Events: Opportunities for families to engage in hands-on activities, learn about STEAM careers, and strengthen family-school connections.
  • Parent Leadership Development: Encouraging parent involvement through advisory councils and leadership roles to ensure family voices are part of the decision-making process.
