Mission Statement

The Collegiate Recovery Community (CRC) of Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) provides an on-campus sanctuary and forum for our students to embody the knowledge, skill, and ability to successfully manage their respective life domains while simultaneously learning improved methods of dealing with the perils and pitfalls associated with use, misuse and abuse of alcohol and other drugs; The WSSU-CRC is committed to helping our student achieve abstinence and avoidance.  We do not want out students suffering in silence! While the WSSU-CRC is here to support out students, we simultaneously promote self-assessment and self-care FEEL, DEAL, HEAL!

WSSU-CRC criteria for entrance into the program

  • An individual must be currently enrolled in Winston-Salem State University
  • An expressed openness and desire to dedicate oneself to make a lifestyle change.
  • Engage regularly in CRC related meetings on campus.
  • The WSSU-CRC also welcomes students who may not be experiencing any drug and/or alcohol concerns but would like to serve as a supporter, confidant and/or promoter of the program.
  • We also realize that there may be individuals who may be curious about drugs and alcohol overall. The CRC is a great resource to provide the education necessary to increase knowledge base of the perils and pitfalls associated with engagement.

Goals of the Program

Provide education on the effects of drug and alcohol use to 100% of the WSSU student body.

Provide resources and information to 100% of students in the CRC to adopt a healthy mindset.

Support the retention rate of students by reducing academic withdrawals caused by drugs and alcohol infractions and/or sanctions.

Uncover-Recover-Discover Theme

With the assistance of licensed, trained and skilled therapists, students will work to:

Uncover those specific issues and concerns which have had a bearing on the perpetuation of alcohol and or drug use.

Recover from being held in chemical and physical combination. Students will be introduced to various recovery models and philosophies such as

  • concepts rooted in 12-step teachings
  • SMART goals
  • Individual and peer group sessions
  • Campus-wide events designed to support the CRC
  • Guest speakers.

Discover new coping mechanisms as well as the internal fortitude in dealing with life circumstances without the engagement of drugs/alcohol

RAM Sessions

Ram Sessions are group-oriented discussions facilitated by therapists and students to on issues and concerns related to drug/alcohol content.

This also includes discussions with Wellness Center Medical Personnel and supportive discussion with WSSU Campus Police regarding legal ramifications of possession and use of illegal substances.

Caring for Our Student Athletes

Student athletes will have the opportunity to engage in programming specifically designed to address drug and alcohol engagement with this population. With the guidance and support of our sport psychology liaison, student-athletes will be able to engage in educational and informational sessions related to: Performance Enhancement Drugs/Steroids use. This also consists of instructing student-athletes on managing physical pain, sport performance anxiety, stress, feelings of inadequacy as an athlete and motivational issues without the use of drugs and/or alcohol.

Continuity of Care for Our Students

Should our therapist determine that services beyond the scope of what the WSSU-CRC provides, we will facilitate the appropriate connection to those specific resources. Our objective is to assure students that we will provide support, guidance, and direction throughout the entire process.
